One clinic is currently using Xdrive but reports having some difficulty with the backup process. I have heard that Carbonite is supposed to be secure but I don't have any experience with them directly. Online solutions are a good idea but often slow.
The price of a portable usb drive is less than $100. The software that comes with the drive is rarely free so don't let it factor in on your choice. You can find free or inexpensive backup solutions on download.com.
I have used the windows backup utility and was not impressed.
